Richard Clegg is a metallurgical engineer who is currently Editor-in-Chief of Engineering Failure Analysis and is an Adjunct Professor at Queensland University of Technology. He has had over thirty years’ experience in the field of engineering failure analysis in both academia and industry in Australia and the UK. He has had considerable experience in investigating the causes of failures in the mining and mineral processing industries in Australia and now runs his own consultancy specialising in engineering failure investigations.

Prof. Dr. Katarina Monkova was inaugurated in the field of mechanical engineering at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (Czech Republic). She completed her engineering studies at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Technical University in Košice Slovakia and graduated as the best student of the year (1/187) with the Rector's Award for excellent results achieved during her studies with a rating of 1.00 (and all exams for the first attempt). Since then, she has been working continuously at the Faculty of Manufacturing Technologies of the Technical University in Košice with a seat in Prešov, Slovakia, and she currently works as a professor in the field of Production Engineering. Her theoretical knowledge and extensive activities for industrial companies allow her to combine scientific and professional activities in the field of design of production technologies and technical equipment with areas of interest, such as metamaterials or simulation of technical components. She is a member of many international scientific organizations (ESIS, SCIEI, IAENG, WASET, IACSIT, SAISE, etc.); member, co-chair and chair of the scientific committees at many domestic and foreign conferences, as well as a member of evaluation commissions and graduate committees. Katarina Monkova is a member of the Sectoral Verification and Evaluation Panels for Technical Information Sciences and Council for Research, Development and Innovation at the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic; and she is like the only woman a member of the "Advanced Manufacturing Technologies Research Team (AMTRteam)" - Top Team of Slovakia in the Mechanical Engineering field. She is also a member of editorial boards and a reviewer of articles in many distinguished journals. During her many years of work at FMT TU Košice, she has been a responsible researcher and a member of the teams of many international and domestic projects. At present, she is an author of more than 350 publications at home and abroad, the main author of 9 monographs and 9 university textbooks and scripts.

George A. Pantazopoulos, Doctor of Engineering

George A. Pantazopoulos graduated from the Chemical Engineering Department of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 1992 (order of graduation considered as equivalent to “summa cum laude”) with a specialization in Materials Science. He received his Ph.D. from the Mechanical Engineering Department of NTUA, in the field of Manufacturing Technology and Processing of Advanced Materials in 1999. He served so far in the metals industry for more than twenty (20) years as a Quality Control Engineer, as a senior R&D project leader and lately as Quality and Technology Manager at ELKEME Hellenic Research Centre for Metals SA. His principal scientific research interests are focused on the field of failure and fracture analysis, materials processing, mechanical testing, surface engineering and tribology. He is the author and co-author of more than 150 papers in the above areas (h-index = 14 and more than 600 citations excluding self-citations), in International Journals and Conferences, as well as 2 books and various monographs/book chapters, while he is frequently invited speaker in Conferences and Academic Institutions. He is Subject Editor in Engineering Failure Analysis and Editorial Board member / reviewer in international Journals in the field of materials science, manufacturing technology and failure analysis. He is the recipient of various awards and distinctions, including a best technical paper from International Metallographic Society IMS / Buehler and a dissertation thesis prize. He lives in his beloved city Athens and he is trying to live entirely, with love and passion, every moment in life, sharing time and offering joyfully to his family, friends and colleagues.

Fracture behaviour of 3D printed Inconel 718 for porous structures applications

Components made of light metal metamaterials using additive approaches meet special applications where safety, reliability and trouble-free operation of the equipment are required. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate and correctly interpret the behaviour of 3D printed components at different types of loads and also to predict the possibility and mechanism of their failure. The lecture will present research dealing with fracture analysis of tensile uniaxially stressed samples made of Inconel 718 alloy by DMLS technology in 7 different directions. Using stereomicroscopic examination and detailed SEM fractographic analysis of fracture surfaces under higher magnification supplemented by digital surface topography analysis, the mechanism of quasi-ductile failure mechanism showing fine size dimple formation was identified.

Fatigue of Micro-sized metals

Extensive experimental works have been conducted on the crack initiation mechanism in the fatigue of bulk metals. These clarify that the understructure of dislocations, e.g. ladder-like one, induces specific slips known as persistent slip bands (PSBs), which brings about a crack on the surface. The pattern size of an understructure is around a few microns or less independent of specimen size. This means that micron- or nanometer-scale metals do not have enough space to form the understructure and the cracking mechanism cannot work. In this lecture, I present characteristic fatigue damage/failure process of micro-sized metals, which is eminently different from the one of bulk counterpart, after I introduce our novel experimental methodology of TEM/SEM in situ observations for the investigation on the mechanical behavior of nano-sized materials in fracture and fatigue.

Aleksandar Grbović is a full professor at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (UB-FME) since 2020. г. He is a member of the Aeronautics Department. ORCID: 0000-0001-9525-4270.
Born in Užice on February 1st, 1970, of father Miodrag and mother Vera. Primary school and gymnasium finished in Užice in 1988 and graduated (Dipl.-Ing. now MSc) on UB-FME in 1994 on Department for Aeronautics with an average grade of 9.03 (out of 10). In 2000 he earned a Magister and in 2012 a Ph.D. title (both on UB-FME) in the field of fatigue design of superalloys commonly used in aircraft design. He started employment at UB-FME in 1995 being assistant, then 2000 Magister assistant, 2012 Assistant professor, 2015 Associate professor, and Full professor since 2020.

In teaching activity, he lectures in 12 courses of the Aeronautical Department (7 in Serbian, 5 in English) at all study levels. He has been a supervisor of 4 Ph.D. theses, he supervises 4 at the moment, was a member of the committee for defense for 15 Ph.D. theses, and was a supervisor over 25 diploma works (now MSc theses). Co-author of 2 published textbooks and third will be published in summer 2021. He contributed to the development of several laboratory installations for educational purposes: a laboratory for numerical simulations and a laboratory for static and dynamic testing of aircraft.

The field of scientific work is aeronautics, with engineering fracture mechanics and fatigue of aircraft structures.

In scientific and research activity he published: 1 paper-chapter in the international monograph, 33 papers in international journals referenced in ISI-JCR-SCI list, 11 papers in other international journals, 26 papers in the proceedings of international conferences, 3 chapters in the national monographs, etc. As evidenced by University Library his papers were cited 404 times in 256 different papers. He gave an invited lecture at 2 international conferences, in 3 was a member of the program committee, and in 3 a session chairman. He is a peer reviewer of the following ISI-JCR-SCI journals: Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, International Journal of Fatigue, Fatigue and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures, Engineering Fracture Mechanics, International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping, Materials & Design, Engineering Failure Analysis, Experimental Techniques, Srpski arhiv za celokupno lekarstvo, FME Transactions, Structural Integrity and Life, Journal of Applied Engineering Science. He participated in numerous projects of the national Ministry for science, and in one was a project leader. Since Oct.2019 he is a team member of the Horizon 2020 project "Structural Integrity and Reliability of Advanced Materials obtained through additive Manufacturing" (SIRAMM).

In engineering activity, he worked as a co-author in 20 engineering projects, and in numerous reports on technical reviews of design projects, as well as in studies and laboratory reports. He participated in delivering solutions to numerous problems in the Serbian aircraft industry and in the development of new constructions in the military industry. He is a member of the Jury for the best technological inventions in Serbia since 2014.

In international cooperation activities, he visited a lot of technical universities and international companies of developed countries and maintains business partnerships with ZF Automotive Germany, SR Technics Zurich, Swiss-Park GmbH и MTU Aero Engines.

In management activities, he is currently the Assistant Director of the Innovation Center of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Belgrade. Over years, he was the mentor of the Euroavia student team, which participated in numerous aviation student competitions around the world (in 2004, they were European champions), and until recently, he was the mentor of the Beoavia team, which took fourth place in the world in the finals of the "Airbus Sloshing Rocket Workshop 2019" competition.

Predicting fatigue crack growth paths using numerical methods

Fatigue crack paths in three different wing spar designs (differential spar, integral, and optimized integral spar) will be presented, with the emphasis on how different cracks' paths affect the fatigue life of the load-carrying structure. Numerical analysis of differential wing spar was carried out and verified using the experimental data, while the other two configurations were analyzed using the extended finite element method and classical finite element method. It will be shown that results obtained numerically provide a better understanding of possible crack paths in complex 3D structures exposed to different combinations of external loads.

Professor Robert Basan, D. Sc., holds the position of a Full Professor at the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Engineering, Rijeka, Croatia. He is a member of the Department of Mechanical Enginering Design since 2000, where he currently holds positions of Head of Chair of Construction and Precision Engineering and Head of the Product Design and Analysis Laboratory. His research topics and interests include characterization and modeling of material behavior, fatigue of materials and structures, load capacity/durability of materials, structures and machine elements. He participated in international scientific and industrial projects with partners from Germany, Austria, Slovenia both as collaborator and project leader. He gave guest and invited lectures at a number of international scientific conferences and industrial workshops. He is acting as reviewer in high level international scientific journals and as reviewer for national and international projects' financing bodies. He was/is also a member of organisation and scientific committees of scientific conferences and workshops. During his career he was responsible for various institutional roles at Faculty/University level.

In 2010 Prof. Basan founded and launched project MATDAT - an Online Materials Properties Database. Over time MATDAT project and materials database has grown into a collaboration and networking platform for exchange of material-related information and ideas between academia and industry. Among others, strategic relationship and collaboration has been achieved with Altair Engineering. In 2015, collaboration was established with Thomson Reuters (now Clarivate Analytics) in the framework of which MATDAT Materials Properties Database and datasets hosted are covered by the Data Citation Index (DCI). In 2017 Prof. Basan founded a company - MATDAT LLC where he is now acting as a CEO.

Currently, he is leading the research project „Development of machine learning-based models for materials behavior estimation - MADEIRA“ (2020-2024) which is funded by the Croatian Scientific Foundation. Project addresses the lack of material data and behavior parameters needed for numerical simulations which is one of the major obstacles to wider use of advanced material models in the industry. Proposed research aims at the development of advanced machine learning-based models for estimation of material behavior and related parameters of engineering-level as well as of advanced constitutive materials models as a solution for mentioned problems.

Conventional methods and machine learning-based models for estimation of materials fatigue parameters and behavior

Materials behavior and corresponding parameters pertinent to various constitutive models need to be known in order to enable proper modelling and simulation of loaded structures and components’ response. The experiment-based determination of material behaviour and parameters, while certainly the most accurate, due to the long duration and high expenses, often cannot be performed in the early phase of product development. Various methods for estimation of cyclic and fatigue behaviour and parameters of the material utilising monotonic properties and additional information related to materials chemical composition, microstructure and processing parameters, have been developed and proposed. Lecture addresses in particular different approaches used in development of various empirically-based and machine learning-based methods and discusses their main features, advantages and drawbacks as a framework for own research and new developments.
